Maileg Mice:
A Beginner's Guide
Everything you need to know before — and after — you fall completely in love.
It starts with one mouse in a matchbox. You open it, and there she is — tucked under a tiny woven blanket, wearing a hand-stitched dress, her ears slightly uneven in a way that makes her feel like a real, individual creature rather than a product. You put her back. You take her out again. You rearrange her furniture. And then, approximately six weeks later, you find yourself tracking the release dates for the next seasonal collection.
This is what happens with Maileg. It is not quite like any other toy brand, and falling in love with it is a particular experience. This guide is for everyone who has just discovered Maileg — or for the parents, grandparents and gift-givers who've been told "it's a Maileg mouse" and want to understand what that means before they shop.
The Brand Behind the Magic
Maileg (pronounced my-lye) is a Danish design house founded in 1999 by illustrator and designer Dorthe Mailil and her husband Erik. The name is a portmanteau of the founders' surname — and the spirit of the brand is woven into every tiny detail they make.
What began as a small collection of hand-crafted characters has grown into one of the most beloved children's toy brands in the world. Today, Maileg releases seasonal collections twice a year — Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter — with limited runs of new characters, accessories and sets that collectors anticipate for months. Some pieces sell out within days. Others become the kind of thing families hand down.
Maileg's philosophy is deeply Scandinavian in its simplicity: toys should be beautiful, made from natural materials, open-ended in their play value, and capable of growing with a child. They don't use plastic except for the polyester filling in their softest pieces. Almost every item is hand-made or at minimum hand-finished, which means no two are exactly identical. A slightly lower ear, a barely-off seam — these are not defects. They are what make each mouse uniquely its own.

Meet the Mouse Family
The heart of the Maileg world is the mouse family — a cast of characters that functions like a real extended family, each with their own personality expressed through their clothing, their accessories and the home they live in.
The Mouse Sizes Explained
Understanding Maileg sizes is the first thing every new collector needs to know — because accessories, furniture and clothing are size-specific. A bed made for a Big Sister Mouse will be too large for a Baby Mouse, and vice versa. The size guide below will save you from the one mistake almost everyone makes on their first order.
| Character | Approx. Length | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mum & Dad Mouse | ~15cm | Largest mice. Cigar box home. Accessories labelled "for mouse" or "Micro" fit them. |
| Big Brother / Big Sister Mouse | ~13cm | Most accessories, clothing and furniture are designed to fit this size. The "default" size. |
| Little Brother / Little Sister Mouse | ~11cm | Slightly smaller. Check product label — some Big Sibling accessories fit. |
| Baby Mouse | ~8–11cm | Smallest size. Dedicated accessories. Baby gown mice are in this category. |
| Baby Twins | ~8cm each | Nestle side by side in one matchbox. Baby Mouse accessories apply. |

Beyond the sibling mice, the Maileg family includes Grandma and Grandpa Mice (who come in their own keepsake cigar boxes), Tooth Fairy Mice (complete with wand and tiny heart-shaped tin for first teeth), special edition sets like the Princess and Pea, and seasonal releases tied to Christmas, Easter and other moments in the year. There are also Maileg Bunnies and Rabbits — a separate but equally beloved family with their own size hierarchy.
"These are not toys children grow out of. They are the kind of things that are handed down."
Where the Mice Live
Part of what makes Maileg so endlessly absorbing is the world-building. The mice don't just exist — they have homes, furniture, routines, and a scale that invites a child to build and rebuild a world around them.
The matchbox is where it begins: a small illustrated box that doubles as a bed, a home, a travel case — wherever the story needs it to be. But the collection extends far beyond the matchbox, into a full range of houses, furniture and accessories that make the Maileg world feel genuinely inhabitable.

Key Houses & Spaces
The Mouse Farmhouse is a beautifully designed multi-room wooden home — cosy, detailed, and built to accommodate the full mouse family. The expandable Annex means the house can grow alongside the collection.
Furniture comes in matching Maileg scale: beds, wardrobes, dining tables, kitchen equipment, nursery tables, vintage floor lamps that actually light up, and even a tiny retro television with a moving picture screen. Each piece is designed with the same attention to finish and detail as the characters themselves.
How to Start a Collection
The most common question we hear at Little Paper Planes is: where do I begin? The answer depends on who the Maileg is for — but there are some starting points that almost never disappoint.
For a New Baby (0–12 months)
The Baby Mouse in Gown is our top recommendation for a newborn gift. Dressed in a tulle gown with lace detail and a matching bonnet, it's beautiful enough to display in a nursery and gentle enough to become a beloved companion. The Tooth Fairy Mouse is a wonderful gift to tuck away for the years ahead — ready for when the first tooth falls.
For a First Birthday
A Big Sister or Big Brother Mouse in a matchbox is the classic first Maileg. Sized for small hands, complete with their own cosy bed, and fully compatible with all the furniture and accessories that can be added over years of birthdays and Christmases to come. It's the beginning of a collection they'll thank you for later.
For a Child Who Already Has Maileg
If they already have a mouse, the world opens up. New outfits, furniture pieces, a matchbox bed to go with an unboxed mouse, or a whole house to bring the family together. The Pumpkin Carriage, the Television with its moving screen, the Vintage Floor Lamp that actually glows — each one deepens the world.
For an Adult Who Simply Loves Beautiful Things
Maileg is — and always has been — as much for adults as it is for children. Dorthe Mailil has spoken about designing pieces she herself would want to keep. Many of our customers collect Maileg seasonal releases the way others collect art. If you know someone who appreciates craft, detail, and the kind of beauty that improves with time, Maileg is a gift that will genuinely surprise them.
✦ Little Paper Planes Collecting Tips
- Start with one mouse before committing to a house — falling in love with the character is what makes the world-building feel meaningful.
- Check which size the mouse is before ordering furniture or clothing — the size guide on the Nordic Fusion website is the most reliable reference.
- Seasonal and limited releases do sell out. If something speaks to you, don't wait.
- Maileg travels beautifully. A mouse in a matchbox is perhaps the most perfectly packaged gift in children's retail.
- Care note: Maileg recommends hand-washing in cold water with mild soap, or machine washing on a gentle cold cycle in a garment bag. Air dry only.

One Last Thing
We said at the start that it begins with one mouse in a matchbox. That is true. But what happens next is less about accumulation and more about attention — the particular quality of focus that Maileg invites. A child kneeling on the floor, arranging furniture, deciding where each character sleeps. A grandmother choosing a seasonal release she knows will mean something years from now. A parent opening the matchbox again, just to see.
This is what we mean at Little Paper Planes when we talk about the art of child's play. Not noise, not screens, not distraction — but the slow, quiet kind of play that leaves something behind. Maileg makes that possible better than almost any other brand we know.
If you have questions about the range, sizing, or finding the right piece for someone you love, our team is always happy to help — in store in Mount Martha, or by email. And if you're ready to start, the whole Maileg range is waiting for you.
