The French pioneer of cinematography, Emil Reynaud, invented the fascinating praxinoscope, the ancestor of cinema, in 1877. He was not only looking for technical solutions, but he also painted the motion pictures with his own hands. The structure of the praxinoscope is based on a cylinder with a vertical axis of rotation. Inside, the drawings are on a strip of paper. The motion phases can be followed in the mirrors placed around the central axis of the cylinder. Although the technical aspect of movie-making has soared high since then, kids and playful adults still admire the praxinoscope. If you turn the wheel with the appropriate speed, the film strips of 12 individual pictures will turn into a short animated film.
