A very special book given to Little Paper Planes from the author's own collection. Moki and Bik are inspired by Wendy's father and his twin, and their childhood living on a boat. Only printed in North America, these wonderful, rollicking tales are no longer in print. We are lucky enough to have signed copies of both Moki and Bik, and Moki and Bik Go To Sea.
Mokie and Bik live on a boat called Bullfrog. Now that their father has come home from the illy-ally-o, the twins are ready to take Bullfrog out to sea. First, though, they need to shipshape!
Soon Mokie and Bik are saving a runaway boat, making friends with a scaredy-seal, and keeping track of a Waggles with A Lot to Learn. Life with the twins is always a rollicky frolicking adventure!
Mokie and Bik are two twins who live on a house boat with their parents and Nanny Ruby. They live with a menagerie of animals and are high on adventure, and apparently their distracted, but loving parents and caregiver give them a wide berth. The language Orr uses is beautiful and expressive, it has such energy. It would make a lovely read-aloud, it could almost be sung it is so delightful. It really is amazing what she has done with words, and for an early chapter book no less. No easy feat.
That being said, it might be a bit tricky for a very new reader. If nothing else, the use of what I guess are Austrailian expressions or maybe just Wendy Orr-isms, would be confusing in the hands of the newest readers. Examples include “hissers” – which I believe are meant to denote a cat and “shipshaped” and “alonely”, to name a few. Within the story they make for a very enjoyable expression, but can be confusing. So only give this to your young, confident readers. Otherwise keep it a shared reading experience.
And the illustrations…simply gorgeous. It is like being privvy to someone’s amazing private sketch book.
