From the artist : Spikey Surrender is a vibrant reflection on motherhood and the magical mother and child relationship, where softness and strength, instinct and independence, protection and freedom all coexist. A love which, alike the cactus, holds its shape while always growing.
Rebecca Abbey creates from the inside out.
The Frankston-based artist came to painting through personal catharsis — and found something far greater waiting: a radiant, unfolding spiritual exploration that has shaped every brushstroke since. That inward journey is visible in her work. Vibrant, layered and instinctual, her abstract paintings pulse with colour, movement and meaning — expressions of renewal, expansion and transformation.
Working under her practice Colour and Flow, Rebecca draws on a rich and interwoven life — a background in Healthcare and Colour Design, training in Colour Therapy, Energy Healing and Crystal Sound Therapy, and a family legacy in painting that literally lives in her work, with remnants of paint from her family's Painting and Decorating business folded into her mixed media pieces.
Motifs and symbols arise in her art both deliberately and organically — what Rebecca describes as light language — a thread she traces, in part, to her Māori heritage.
Her work doesn't just hang on a wall. It holds something.
