Twenty light blue planks, twenty dark blue — and an art book of structures designed specifically around this palette.

The KAPLA Book and Colours set is where the logic of the single plank meets colour. Each of the 40 planks is dyed with food-grade colouring — 20 in light blue, 20 in dark blue — and the accompanying art book contains construction models designed specifically around these two tones, from simple stacked forms to graphic, abstract designs that use the contrast between the two blues as part of the structure itself. No glue, no clips, no connectors: every construction holds by balance and gravity alone. KAPLA planks are all identical, which means this set adds directly to any existing collection. Landes pine from KAPLA's own sustainably managed forests in south-west France.

KAPLA was invented in 1987 by Tom van der Bruggen, a Dutch antique dealer who fell in love with a ruined farm on the Tarn river in southern France and decided to turn it into a castle. To plan the build, he made a scale model — and finding that wooden blocks were too bulky for the details, he designed his own plank, based on the precise ratio 1:3:15. The result was KAPLA: a single plank that can build anything. The planks are made from sustainably managed Landes pine, grown in KAPLA's own forests in the south-west of France, and coloured with food-grade dyes. The company remains based near Bordeaux.
